General Requirements for Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners in Indiana
Aspiring clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners need to complete educational programs at accredited and approved schools.
To become a clinical nurse specialist, one must complete at least a master’s degree program.
Nurse practitioners have different standards to meet.
Nurse practitioners who don’t hold at least an MSN degree must earn certification.
The certification process is issued by third parties and focused on a defined scope of practice.
Additional Requirements for Nurse-Midwives
Nurse-midwives need to meet education and certification requirements.
The first requirement is the completion of the appropriate educational program.
Next aspiring nurse midwives need to pursue national certification maintained by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
To earn a certificate, one must pass the national examination.
Prescriptive Authority Requirements
To obtain a prescriptive authority, nurse midwives or nurse practitioners need to complete at least two semester hours of graduate coursework in pharmacology.
The requirements for out-of-state advanced practitioners who have finished their pharmacology course work in five or more years ago, include continuing education.
The licensing agencies require that your coursework isn’t’ older than two years for obtaining a license.
Applicants need to show proof of 30 hours of education, and eight hours must be in pharmacology.
Out-of-state practitioners need to show evidence of recent prescriptive work.
In Indiana, nurses who are granted prescriptive authority work under a collaborative practice agreement.
All nurses need to renew their prescriptive authority every other year.
Moreover, the educational requirement depends on the date of issuance.
Additionally, nurses who will prescribe controlled substances need to apply for Controlled Substances Registration (CSR) and a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration registration.
The Application Process
You can download all forms for the prescriptive authority application from the Profesional Licensing Agency website.
The obligatory documents include a copy of RN license – Indiana or license issued in other compact states.
Those who applied for the Indiana RN license can also apply for the prescriptive authority while their license is pending.
Additionally, official transcripts need to be sent directly from the issuing institutions.
Documents related to the current certifications are required if the applicant holds a graduate degree.
With all documents, applicants need to submit a professional-quality photo.
The fee is $50.
Nurse-midwives can download an application packet from the PLA website as well.
Nurse Anesthetist Requirements in Indiana
Even though nurse anesthetists aren’t recognized as advanced practice nurses in Indiana, they need to meet education and certification requirements.
The state code notes that they need to complete programs accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
They need to pursue their certification through the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.

However, bear in mind that the new name of the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthetists in Indiana is the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
Nurse anesthetists don’t have to apply to the Professional Licensing Agency.
Instead, they can administer anesthesia without gaining prescriptive authority, but cannot earn the same credentials as advance practice nurses.
They need to renew their certifications every two years.

Aspiring advanced practice nurses in Indiana have plenty of options for proper education.
There are hybrid, online and on-campus programs suitable for a variety of specializations.
You can choose DNP, MSN, or Graduate Certificate program.
For example, the University of Southern Indiana offers in Evansville offer online graduate certificate program and online program with a concentration on Family nurse practitioner, Adult/Gerontology Acute and Primary care practitioner, and Psychiatric/Mental Health NP.
Those interested in traditional on-campus courses can choose the MSN program at Indiana University East, Indiana University Kokomo, or Indiana Wesleyan University.
Hybrid programs are available on Marian University Indianapolis, University of Indianapolis, etc.
DNP programs are available only at Saint’s Mary College and Marian University Indianapolis.
